Sigh.
A Da Vinci Code-ish case-- interesting certainly, but one too many twists at the end, I thought. And it suffers from a lack of our normal supporting cast (again) but at least Miranda is in this one... mostly.
The shifting perspectives (a completely new device for this series) made it a bit disorienting (probably largely because of the newness.... wouldn't have been bad if they'd been doing that all along).
NO real resolution for Garcia (tiny bit implied). Crappy pretended resolution for Isabella (talk about sweeping a difficult plot point under the rug.... wow).
Would have only gotten 3 stars, but got the extra 1/2 for the art history stuff.

The Bone Yard by Jefferson Bass

An interesting primary case-- historical and heart-wrenching.
Not as much resolution as I'd have liked on the secondary, "present-day" case.
I did think it suffered from a lack of the usual supporting characters. I missed Miranda, especially. And Art.
NO resolution at all on Garcia OR Isabella, which was annoying.
Overall, though, good story.

The Bone Thief by Jefferson Bass

This one didn't come together quite as well as earlier ones, I thought, and we're again stretching the "how much can happen to this guy" limit.
Overall, though, it's not a bad story.
Mostly recommended, it does deal with some of what was left hanging in Bones of Betrayal, but if you're burning out on the series this one probably won't help with that.

Bones of Betrayal by Jefferson Bass

Okay, this is where we start to ask "how many really bad things can happen to this poor main character and/or the people he loves?"!
Seriously.
After being exposed to some seriously scary radiation, Brockton and his friends are worried about not just catching the killer but how sick they're going to get.
The historical aspects of this one rock-- it would only get 3 stars without them.

The Devil's Bones by Jefferson Bass

So much better than book 2, and it resolves a lot of what happened in book 2 also.
Still didn't love it quite as much as book 1, but a good read.
The case with the cremations is interesting.
Ultimately some of it strains credulity, but still good.
Overall, recommended.

Flesh and Bones by Jefferson Bass

My LEAST favorite of the series.
But you have to read it or you'll be totally lost in book 3.
Between the diatribes against "intelligent design" (creationism) and the "how can any cop possibly be that stupid" I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as the first.
But the main character is still good. And I like the series enough that I kept going.
Read it only if you liked the first enough to keep going.... Because you absolutely need to read it to go on.
(If it were a stand-alone rather than the weak link in a good series, it would have only gotten 2 stars.)

Carved in Bone by Jefferson Bass

The first of the Dr. Bill Brockton books, and my favorite. Well, of what I've read.
Combining an interesting case in the present with a fascinating 30+ year old corpse, there are plenty of twists and turns.
This is a reread for me-- been years since I read it and I figured I'd better brush up to read the rest of the series.
Overall, recommended, but not for the squeamish.
(This was a Reader's Choice in like... 2007? I think.)
