Shakespeare

As a Humanities/English major, one would assume I know my Shakespeare, right?

(I haven't finished my degree yet, though. So don't be expecting too much here.)

And I do know my Shakespeare.... sort of. But when I read this Shakespeare post from Haiku Amy and it got me thinking... how many of the Bard's plays have I actually read?

The sad truth? I don't remember. How bad is that?

I know for certain I have read:
  1. The Comedy of Errors
  2. A Midsummer Night's Dreams
  3. King Lear
  4. Macbeth
  5. Romeo and Juliet
  6. Hamlet
  7. Othello

I THINK I've read:

  1. The Tempest
  2. The Merchant of Venice

I am at least vaguely familiar with:

  1. Twelfth Night
  2. Much Ado About Nothing
  3. The Taming of the Shrew
  4. Julius Caesar

Could be worse, right? There's a whole spate of King plays in there that I've missed entirely somehow. Which is pretty sad.

How about you? Where do you stand on the Bard Knowledge Meter?

  1. Oh no worries - I'm in the same boat. Although, I'm surprised to see that some of the best comedies are the ones you haven't read. I devoured the comedies my sophomore year when I took a specialized Shakespeare class. But I'll soon graduate in May with a specialization in both literature and writing and I have read only one of the tragedies. But to each their own right?
Good luck with your Shakespearean endeavors.

  2. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a hard time remembering my Shakespeare. LOL.

  3. Miss Remmers-- I know, it's weird, isn't it? But then, most of what I've read has been for classes and the tragedies kept popping up as required!

Haiku Amy-- Part of my problem is if I've seen it on stage (like Tempest) I'm not sure if that's the only reason I know it or not!!

It's probably good I haven't read the Kings yet... I'd have a terrible time keeping them straight!

  4. Britt-
Did you read the Merry Wives of Windsor for book group? I know I sure didn't, but I thought it may have been a possibility for you.

  5. *Hangs head* Nope.

That was right around when I moved, I think. It's the only book I've skipped!
