Malcolm is a rat but the people at school think he's a mouse. "I'm willing to be accepted as a mouse to not be sold as python food, but this misunderstanding has to stop!" he says.
One night, he meets the midnight academy-- there's Aggy, the leader, HB (aka honey bunny, but he does NOT like being called that; he only tolerates it from Aggy), Jesse James (who is NOT a girl), Billy the Kid (who is NOT a boy), Oscar the fish, and a hermit crab and a typing tarantula.
There's also Snip the cat who lives on the fourth.
Together, the midnight academy is the eyes, ears, nose, and whiskers of the school.
