Mrs. Pollifax, Unveiled by Dorothy Gilman

5 stars

And so, sadly, we have come to the end of the Mrs. Pollifax books.

Which leaves me strongly tempted to start over from the beginning!!

Through the last few crazy months, these have been my comfort reads.

For the record, in the last few months we have: been told we had to move; house-hunted; bought a house; had a death in the family; family in town for the funeral; a wedding; a vacation that included driving with our three children for 12 hours each way; oh, I forgot MOVING; Boo's Kindergarten "graduation", dance festival and registering at a new school; J considering learning to walk... and teething...

I'm exhausted just typing all of that!  (And yes, all but the first 2 of those has been in the past month.)

Anyway, clearly I haven't gotten a whole lot of reading done, but Mrs. Pollifax has been there for me.  (And Farrell-- I love Farrell!)

This one was just as fun as the others, though it was interesting because Dorothy Gilman used more current world events, so it was all Middle East all the time, even referencing the Gulf War.  (Which, yeah, if there were real time happening Mrs. Pollifax would be like 95 or something, but whatever.)

Basically, if you haven't read them yet DO.

Next week I'll have pics for you.... I LOVE how the kids' bookcases have worked out in this new house!!!  Just finished it up yesterday!  :)

The End of the Cold War

So this whole Mrs. Pollifax kick was started off by a friend of mine and as she gave me a couple to borrow she said something interesting.

The end of the Cold War was a tragedy for writers of spy novels.

And while I see her point, I can't decide if I agree.

On the one hand, yes, you don't have the same spy/espionage set-up without the Cold War.  But there are still plenty of CIA-ish thrillers being written, right?

The Russians are being replaced by terrorists, but is that a reasonable comparison?

So basically, I want to know what you think.  Because my brain has turned to mush.  And because I'm curious.  And because really, I don't remember the Cold War.

The Amazing/Elusive Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman

Double review!
5 stars each

(Does that make this a 10 star review? lol)

So it's officialy, I love Mrs. Pollifax.

Yes, the stories run together a bit and yes they're similar, but dang it all, I love this quirky lady.

I think Elusive is my favorite so far.  Talking the "underground" (all 4 of them) into attacking the prison, blackmailing another agent... what more could you want?  Oh yeah, and irritating the living daylights out of the government! :)

Amazing is set in Turkey, Elusive in Bulgaria.  In both she's there to simply deliver something, but of course, nothing goes as planned.  Does anything ever?

And poor Mr. Carstairs at the CIA may have a coronary worrying about her one of these days. :)

I can't wait to get my hands on more of these!!

The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman

SO much fun!  Oh my word.  I love Mrs. Pollifax!

This one definitely needs to be read first, and now I'm figuring out what order to read the rest of them in.

At 63, Emily Pollifax feels purposeless and so she does what she's always wanted-- goes to Langley to see if they need more spies.  Craziness ensues. :)

Overall, I really enjoyed this spy novel... can we call it a cozy thriller? lol
